Cummins officially showcased its new X15D engine (booth number 94) at the 2025 Brisbane Truck Show (May 15-18), strongly declaring its leading position in the heavy-duty road transportation industry. This high-performance next-generation diesel engine is currently named PX-15 in Paccar's recently released DAF XG Cab Over Engines truck, designed specifically to comply with Euro 6 emissions standards, redefining the performance benchmark for highway engines.
Cummins has taken internal combustion engine technology to a whole new level with the X15D, "said Sean McLean, Director and General Manager of Cummins South Pacific Highway Business Unit. It not only achieved the highest output in the history of Cummins truck engines, but also set a new benchmark for fuel efficiency at extremely low emission levels.
The maximum power of X15D is 660 horsepower (1800 rpm), with a peak torque of 2360 pound feet, covering a wide range of speeds from 1400 rpm to 900 rpm. This performance supports Cummins' leading engine downshifting strategy, which aims to reduce cruising speed to improve fuel economy while maintaining strong power to meet the needs of drivers and operators.
Another major highlight of X15D is its weight advantage. Thanks to innovative design features such as a lightweight cast iron cylinder block and a composite oil pan, the dry weight of this engine is 225 kilograms lighter than the current X15, achieving the highest power to weight ratio in the industry. For Cab Over Engines trucks, engine weight reduction helps effectively reduce the weight of the front axle.
In addition, the new platform is equipped with Cummins' latest generation high-pressure common rail fuel system (XPI) and a standard exhaust gas pressure relief supercharger. The Euro 6 emission standard is achieved through an integrated post-treatment system, which integrates a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and a urea selective catalytic reduction device (SCR) into one unit.
The X15D has entered the Australian market under the name PX-15 and is installed on DAF XG Cab Over Engines trucks, equipped with ZF's 16 speed automatic TraXon gearbox and Cummins Meritor MT21-165 rear axle. The maximum combined total weight (GCM) of the vehicle is 97 tons. "In the future, X15D will also be applied to other truck brands to meet the requirements of Euro 6, "McLean added." With further local testing and validation, higher gross weight transportation scenarios will also be supported
McLean stated that the initial field testing of the engine focused on B-double (double trailer train) type applications. A total of 18 660 horsepower engines participated in the validation project, with a cumulative mileage of approximately 6 million kilometers. The tests mainly focused on fuel economy, performance, and durability, "he said." The feedback was very positive, especially in terms of drivability and torque performance
Cummins is currently conducting further testing on higher gross weight application scenarios to ensure that the X15D continues to meet its high standards in terms of durability and performance.
X15D is one of the core components of the Cummins HELM platform. HELM represents the concepts of higher efficiency, lower emissions, and multiple fuels. This platform has fuel adaptability and can support various fuels such as diesel, natural gas, and hydrogen. All power versions are based on the same infrastructure and have a high degree of component universality, thereby reducing complexity and simplifying maintenance processes.
X15D has become a highlight at the Cummins booth at this year's Brisbane Truck Show, showcasing the future of heavy road transportation in Australia and even globally to the audience.
